| Ten percent of NYC suicides involve tourists |

One in 10 suicides in New York City involve visitors to the Big Apple, a phenomenon known as "suicide tourism," according to research presented yesterday at the American Public Health Association meeting in Washington, DC. "These data suggest that there are individuals who travel to a distant location and take their lives," often in well-known tourist hotspots, Dr. David Vlahov of The New York Academy of Medicine noted in a statement. Vlahov and colleagues sifted through files at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York City for all suicide deaths in New York City between 1990 and 2004.
